Chain transfer reagents for molecular weight control in radical photo-polymerization
Radiation curing of (meth)acrylate-based photopolymerizable formulations is a widely used technique for decorative and protective coatings industry. Furthermore it is nowadays used for modern applications such as dental filling materials [1], reprography (photoresists, printing plates, integrated circuits), laser induced 3D curing, h
Control of UV Offset Printing Processes by In-line NIR Spectroscopy
In the last 15 years, near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy has been developed to one of the most common methods for process control. This is related to its analytic power and versatility, which allows adaption of this method to a wide range of quite different problems [1-3]. As a spectroscopic technique, NIR spectroscopy is a non-destruc
Confocal Raman microscopy study of several factors known to participate in overcoming O2 inhibition
The free-radical photopolymerization (FRP) of coatings suffers from inhibition by atmospheric oxygen which reacts with excited species and radicals.1 During the process, oxygen diffuses from the atmosphere into the film and leads to inhibition period, longer irradiation time, incomplete conversion of the coating and heterogeneity in
Coloured and Tinted Lacquers - The Next Step to Take for Radiation-Curable and Waterborne Binders
During recent years VOC regulations in Europe keep the wood coating industry moving from classical technologies, e.g. solventborne 2K polyurethane and acid catalysed cure of melamine resins, to modern technologies, such as 100% and waterborne radiation-curable resins. Among these modern systems waterborne radiation-curable resin base
Can UV LED breakthrough into graphic arts printing applications?
UV LED curing is rapidly gaining acceptance in the graphics arts industry and could soon be the preferred choice for drying in inkjet printing applications. The question is.... will it ever be effective enough for commercial printing applications in packaging and labelling? This paper sets out to address this question. The presentatio
Atmospheric Plasma Processing of Film Substrates for Enhanced Adhesion of EB Curable of Printing Inks and Clear Coatings
Atmospheric Plasma Processing (APP) under controlled gaseous atmospheres of film substrates leads to grafting of nitrogen based chemical functions onto the surface of the substrates. APP treated film surfaces of polyolefins such as BOPP show excellent adhesion with acrylate based EB printing inks and clear coatings eliminating the ne
Photoelastomers based on thiol-ene polymerization
Diseases of the cardiovascular system are the main reasons for morbidity and mortality in all western countries. The total direct and indirect costs of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and stroke for 2007 are estimated at $286 billion for the USA alone.1 Coronary heart disease (CHD) or ischemic heart disease (IHD) plays the most importa
Anti-corrosion properties of UV-cured coatings
The corrosion resistance of a polyester-acrylate-based UV-curing coating was investigated using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The resin was then modified using a hydrophobic compound and the influence of this modification on physical, mechanical and corrosion resistance properties of the coatings was studied. A broadening o
