As previously reported, a new class of amine synergist/coinitiators has been developed for use with type II photoinitiators, such as benzophenone. Traditional amine synergists (ethanolamines and amine acrylates) provide for good cure, but are deficient in some performance areas, such as blushing, discoloration of pigments and extractables. This new class of amine synergist addresses some of the problems associated with traditional amine synergists. This paper presents and discusses the most recent addition to this class of products. Results from performance evaluations in an overprint varnish will be presented showing that this amine synergist is comparable or superior to traditional amines.
