The use of floor covering materials in houses, buildings ... is so common now, that
there is a wide variety of these products on the market. There is not only a broad
choice in the type of substrate but also in the type of finishing. To choose one of
these products, one must know for how long it will resist the service conditions,
without losing its desirable characteristics, i.e. its appearance.
Radiation curing is becoming a more important player in this market segment.
It's advantages for this type of application is that it is free of both solvent and
formaldehyde.

Also the energy consumption is in favour of UV / EB.
For flooring applications radiation is used to cure coatings onto wood, plastics and
paper laminated to fibrewood.

Besides the normal characteristics for coatings, abrasion resistance is one of the
main requirements.

At present there are four standard test methods used to determine the wear
resistance of this type of material : Taber, Frick-Taber, abrasive cylinder and
Stuttgart pendulum (1-3).

In this study we used the first two tests to evaluate prepolymers and monomers. UV
curing is compared to EB curing.

The aim of the work was to compare products and test methods not to optimise a
formulation for a specific test method.
