This paper describes how ultra-fine polyamide powders can be used to reach a balance of desired
properties in UV-curable industrial coatings. To illustrate this, viscosity of the UV system, radiation curing modification, gloss control, coating's friction, additives dispersion within the coating and abrasion resistance were compared for formulations made with polyamide powders and other additives. At a low level of addition, ultra-fine polyamide powders can improve the abrasion resistance and reduce the gloss of the UV cured industrial coatings with a minimal impact on the formulation viscosity and the coating friction, whereas other additives have a negative effect on both abrasion resistance and coating friction. We found an optimum concentration where abrasion resistance is maximized and also defined new directions to better improve the abrasion resistance.
