Vinyl and glycidyl esters of Versatic 10 acid are well established building blocks for coating resins. They provide outdoor durability, hydrophobicity, chemical resistance, improve adhesion and viscosity reduction in a wide range of polyesters, acrylic and vinyl resins. Recently the acrylate ester of glycidyl versatate (ACE) has become available for use as a low volatility reactive diluent for UV and dual cure applications. ACE has a unique structure combining a bulky hydrophobic tail, a pendant hydroxyl group and an acrylate functionality. In this paper the benefits of ACE, in laminating and PSA UV formulations applied to various substrates are discussed. Amongst many benefits, an improved adhesion to polyolefins and polyethylene terephthalate is demonstrated.
