A wide variety of parameters have to be considered when formulating any printing ink. From pigment
dispersion through to press performance and cure response, the emphasis is always on making the ink "print". However there are certain performance factors which whilst not reflecting the actual printability of ink, are considered part of it's press performance. These factors also have to be addressed by the formulator.

One of these is "misting" or "ink-fly". Misting is the term given to small airborne particles of ink that are
present wherever high speed roller printing take place eg. offset lithography and more recently flexography. The creation of these small particles has been exacerbated by the need to increase throughput via higher press speeds. These small size particles are a problem since they can be inhaled by the press room operators and have an effect on their health (1). This in turn could lead to restricted market development of UV Curable inks.
