A new generation of low voltage, low cost electron beam dryers in the 70 kV — 110 kV range, has opened new opportunities for electron beam drying in the packaging and printing industry. Electrons accelerated at these low energies are now efficiently used to cure photoinitiator-free offset and flexo-inks, overprint varnishes and lacquers and laminating adhesives. These new and modern EB-dryers are small and compact; they offer high processing speeds and lower power consumption and they are less expensive than EB processors used to be. An update in the development of EB processing, as the curing mechanism in web-offset and CI-flexo printing, in varnishing and in laminating of flexible packaging substrates will be presented. This update will include the commercialization status and an overall
economic analysis.
