Although the favourable technological properties and the high profitability of UV-curable
paint systems are well known in various industrial applications, such as wood, foil and
plastic parts coating, UV technology has not yet entered the automotive OEM coating
industry. This is all the more surprising since the demand of the automotive industry for
improved scratch resistance accompanied by good chemical resistance can be met
using UV-curing methods, which has been shown in polycarbonate lens coating.
UV curing is not yet used in the automotive industry because of the interaction of the UV
clearcoat with the heat-cured colored basecoats underneath it. Furthermore the difficulty
in curing shadowed areas on the car body, such as the interior, undercuts and rebates is
not yet solved satisfactorily.
For this reason the UV technology must always be combined with another method.
Therefore the curing method currently under development for OEM finishing is a method
combining both heat and UV curing.
