The objective of this work is the evaluation of the potential use of acrylic colloidal silica in the EB or
UV curing of transparent coatings for OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer). Formulations based
on HDDA, TPGDA, aliphatic urethane triacrylate containing acrylic silica organosols of 25 and 50
nanometers size were EB or UV cured over PC (polycarbonate) , PMMA (polymethylmethacrylate)
PETG (polyethylene terephtalate glycol), PS (polystyrene) and SAN (styrene-acrylonitnle copolymer)
plastic sheets. Dynamic mechanical properties of the self-supported coatings were measured, as well
as gloss, surface hardness, abrasion and chemical resistance of the coated plastics sheets. The
observed enhancement of the mentioned properties is related to the presence of colloidal silica
homogeneously dispersed in the cured coating.
