Laminating Adhesives can be generally classified in to three broad types depending on the demands the packages are expected to meet. They can be grouped as high, medium and standard performance systems. In a very general sense, high performance adhesive applications represent the most demanding like retort packaging and often involve aluminum foil as a substrate. Medium performance applications usually require boiling resistance and or steam sterilization using film / film structures, like polyester or polyamide and polyethylene. Standard performance applications involve typical snack food laminations made of polyolefin films with or without metallization. While solvent based polyurethane adhesives met all of the above needs of the converting industry for many years, increasing environmental concerns brought about alternative adhesive technologies.
