The difficulties encountered when attempting to obtain adhesion of radiation curable coatings to metal are well known. The effects of pigments on the extent and rate of cure in EB curable systems are less well documented, although it is qualitatively understood that they affect the reactions involved. This paper describes how FT-JR spectroscopy has been used to obtain a quantitative assessment of the effects of various anti-corrosive pigments and extenders on the cure of radiation curable systems. The corrosion protection of some coatings will also be considered.
