Monomers based on vinyl esters have recently been identified as suitable alternative to (meth)acrylates, especially due to the low irritancy and cytotoxicity of these monomers. The drawback of vinyl esters is their relatively low reactivity compared to (meth)acrylates. To overcome that it was tried to enhance the reactivity by the use of the thiol-ene reaction. Photo-DSC measurements proved that the photoreactivity of vinyl esters could be boosted to a large extent with the help of the thiol-ene reaction. This combination also offers some further positive effects, such as low oxygen inhibition and lower shrinkage. Another nice sideeffect is the toughening of these materials by thiol-ene polymerization. Mechanical properties were determined by DMA and Charpy impact tests. Furthermore, we were able to confirm low toxicity of all components by cell culture experiments.
