Both silicones and nanosized alumina particles can be used to improve certain mechanical properties (hardness, scratch resistance) of UV-crosslinking wood varnishes. However, selected combinations of both additive groups show much greater effects together, than the individual additives alone. Effective dosage levels and various combination ratios of nanosized alumina particles with silicones have been studied in typical UV binders. Positive and negative side effects of both additive groups will be highlighted, and final suggestions will be made in order to select the optimal combination ratio, resulting in strong synergistic effects.
