The key in achieving good UV flexographic inks is related to pigment wetting, ink rheology and reactivity of the formulated system. Rheological behaviour with the right amount of well-chosen pigment is in direct relation to pigment wetting. These bring many different properties to the formulated ink such as good dispersion, good flow, good transfer on equipment and substrates, correct viscosity and print colour strength. Also of high importance is the adhesion characteristic required of the ink and this wilt affect the choice of the resins. Other characteristics of the materials such as mechanical properties, final odour and price will also be important in their final selection for flexographic inks. Optimising the right compromise is a challenge for ink manufacturers.
