UV curable adhesives have enjoyed relatively rapid commercial
growth within the last 10 years. Nevertheless, they typically
constitute a relatively small share of most marketareas, a
situation which signifies that potential advantages are perceived
not to overcome their limitations. Recently, the strategy of
utilizing auxiliary dark cure processes to supplement UV cure was
advanced to ameliorate at least some of the inherent
limitations.

This report continues the theme of improving UV curable adhesives
with focus on the importance of utilizing the appropriate,
photoinitiator (P1) and P1 concentration, as well as the
appropriate light source, particularly from the standpoint of
lamp intensity (or irradiance). The interrelationships of
photoinitiator concentration, light intensity, cure rate, cure
depth and % conversions are discussed. Potential advantages and
opportunities for enhancing cure properties and for broadening
the selection of reactive functionality by utilizing high
intensity lamps are advanced. At the same time, the need to
reformulate compositions for exploiting higher intensity is
stressed. Temperature effects are also discussed.
