The present studies mark a breakthrough in photoinitiator development, in the sense that, under appropriate conditions, an abstraction type initiator shows a higher curing efficiency than a cleavage type photoinitiator. The studies reveal a remarkable discovery in the field of ultraviolet curing, viz., a synergism between maleimides and benzophenone analogs. The results from the present studies show that blends of a maleimide with different benzophenones show excellent efficiency for curing practical formulations. The studies further show that the efficiencies of the maleimide blends are fully realized when the Fusion "D" bulb is used for curing the formulations. A blend of the maleimide with 3 — methyl benzophenone has the advantage of being a liquid, making its incorporation into UV curable formulations easy. A blend of the maleimide with 4 - benzoyl biphenyl shows an extraordinarily high efficiency when cured using the Fusion "D" bulb.
