The question of migratiOn-capable components in UV-cured coatings plays a dominant
role. For food packaging, odour and migration problems are of crucial importance. A
number of analysis techniques were applied and described in literature to determine
the rate of curing in irradiated coatings, printing inks and varnishes. 1]
But all these methods have one major drawback. They are highly sophisticated,
specialised-laboratory methods that can only be performed by specialists.
However, it is above all quality assurance departments who are calling for a method
that can be applied as directly as possible in-line in the coating and printing process,
and in particular is easy to handle.

In cooperation with Bruker-Saxonia and the Institut für Oberflachenmodifizierung
Leipzig we developed a measuring method based on ION-MOBILITY-SPECTROMETRY
in oder to allow the determination of residual, non-crosslinked and
extractable components in UV-cured coatings and printing inks.

When the author first reported on these test methods on October 24, 1992, at the
adhesives and surface treatment seminar of Prof. Nitzl in Munich, the usability of this
process could be established in principle. However a number of questions remained
open. 2].

We therefore worked more intensively in this field, the result being that a measuring
method tried and tested unter working conditions can be presented today.
