Crosslinking systems based on N-alkyl/aryl maleimide (Ml) and vinyl ether (VE) show very interesting properties These systems are very fast, are able to cure without any photoinitiator under UV light and show very low oxygen inhibition effect. Moreover, using vinyl ether appears as an environment friendly alternative to the acrylic monomers which smell and cause skin and eye irritation. Though, N-alkyl maleimide are toxic, the N-aryl maleimide are less harmful and high molecular weight maleimide are harmless. Compared to vinyl ethers, allyl ethers are less expensive and less irritating. Like vinyl ether, allyl ether does not undergo homopolymerization. The chemistry of allyl ether is extraordinary versatile and allyl ether crosslinker having aD sort of backbone's chemical structures can be prepared to tune their physical and chemical properties. Such systems can be applied on all kinds of substrates, from metals to wood through polymeric materials. We have reported recently that N-alkyl maleimides (Ml) can efficiently photocrosslink in the presence of allyl ethers (AE) Like the MI/vinyl ether system it is also possible to cure with UV light the MI/allyl ether mixture in the absence of any photoinitiator. The system can be sensitized by visible photoinitiating systems and used in laser imaging or stereolithographic applications for example. We will show that the new Ml/AE crosslinking system can be used in liquid coatings, varnishes or glues as well as solid systems like powder coatings.
