A new bifunctional photoinitiator is presented It reacts in combination with an hydrogen donors, in particular tertiary amines. It is suitable for pigmented systems, especially for thin layers UV curable printing inks based on dark pigments. One of its peculiarities, in comparison to the other photoinitiators, is the absence of odour developed during and after curing process. Preliminary toxicological evaluations show its safety in handling. The technology of photoinduced polymensation is widely applied in several industrial fields. In pigmented systems, the UV radiation absorption of pigments competes with the photoinitiatorforthe available energy. In the region 300-400 nm, most pigments show a window of minimum absorption. The new photoinitiator, LFC 1001, charactensed by a red shifted UV absorption (fig.1) allows to use standard medium pressure mercury lamps to obtain high performances and interesting line speed production.
In this presentation we report performance evaluations and stability studies obtained using LFC 1001 in laboratory and industrial UV curable inks.
