The use of electron beam curing (EBC) for printing inks and varnishes, particularly in the (food) packaging industry is growing rapidly. Ecology and economy are the driving forces. An important, if not a key contribution, to this growth are low voltage EB systems. It has only been about 5 years since the first low voltage EB equipment operating in the 80 -125 kV range was introduced for curing applications in the packaging industry in Europe. The electron energy of these systems is lower and more efficiently deposited to the thin layers to be cured (dried). Low voltage EB systems are thus smaller and more compact than traditional EB equipment and, due to their effective generation of energetic electrons, they also consume considerable less energy.

The paper will show why and for what applications these EB units are used and it will present an update on low voltage EB equipment. New applications and products driving this growth in EB processing will be also discussed.
