Radiation curable powder coatings are now in the early stages of commercialisation. For years, the coating industry has sought ways to lower the curing temperature of powder coatings. The recently developed UV-curable powder coatings offer the possibility to cure powder coatings at temperatures is low as 100 -120°C. Another advantage of these radiation curable powder coatings is the high cure speed and the relatively low energy comsumption. The radiation curable powder coatings are cured in a two step process in which flow and cure are completely separated. First, the applied powder is melted via IR radiation and afterwards the film is cured with UV-light. The coating performance of a UV-curable powder coating may strongly depend on the curing conditions used. This paper describes the influence of parameters like temperature, the type of UV-light used, the UV-dose, and UV peak irradiance in combination with the applied coating formulation.
