A handful of different coating systems are used in the metal coating market today:
o 1 pack waterborne/solventborne acrylics and air-drying alkyds
o 2 pack urethanes (based on alkyds or acrylics)
o pack waterborne/solventborne epoxy/amine
UV curable coatings are becoming more important in this field, for a number of reasons. Like other metal coating systems, UV curable coating systems provide protection against chemical damage, corrosion and mechanical degradation. UV curable systems are particularly attractive in providing protection against mechanical damage, where properties like hardness and flexibility are important. In addition, UV curable systems can provide an alternative to solventborne systems — a key consideration in regions where regulations restrict the amount of organic solvent emissions that can be released into the environment. UV coatings are well-known for providing exceptional mechanical properties in highly-crosslinked systems. As a result, UV technology is often the preferred technology for coatings on wood, flooring, furniture, construction, graphic arts and electronic applications. However the use of UV curable resins in metal coatings is still relatively limited because their ability to deliver basic properties such as corrosion resistance, flexibility and adhesion to metal, is not yet widely known. Within Cytec Surface Specialties, focused development has led to tailor-made UV curable products that address the specific needs of metal formulators. These resins are already commercially available.
