In this paper different design technologies of electronic ballasts and their system as well as lamp
related characteristics are presented. The profitable appliance of medium pressure mercury discharge lamps in UV curing is basically linked to the quality of thermal and electrical lamp operating conditions. Especially the highly loaded and doped discharge lamps have to be operated under well controlled electrical conditions. Over the years the traditionally used magnetic ballasts have been advanced to overcome the problems of non controlled power fluctuations. The simple magnetic choke changed to a more complex system including electronic control units and magnetic power stage. In recent years the development of electronic power components allowed the replacement of the traditional magnetic power stage by an electronic power stage. This was the pre-requisite for the more compact and smaller electronic lamp power supplies, so called electronic baUast. The new electronic ballast generation gives highest performance in the control of printing processes as well as in the design of the switch cabinets.
