A blend of 4 - benzoyl biphenyl (BBP) and a maleimide (Ml) was found to be an excellent photoinitiator for curing a variety of formulations. It was found that a combination of the BBP I Ml blend and an oligomeric amine synergist resulted in a very efficient photoinitiating system. It was found that for some formulations, cure speeds obtained using this system was more than double the cure speeds obtained using the cleavage photoinitiators, viz., 2 — hydroxy 2 - methyl 1 — phenyl propanal and 1- hydroxy cyclohexyl phenyl ketone. In general, the BBP / Ml blend exhibited maximum efficiency when used in conjunction with the Fusion "0" bulb. However, for the polyurethane acrylate based formulations used in the present studies, the BBP I Ml blend exhibited maximum efficiency when used in conjunction with the Fusion "H" bulb.
