The surfaces of various polymers were modified by UV irradiation in the presence of gaseous hydrazine. In the case of polystyrene (PS) and poly(2-vinylnaphthalene) (PVN), nitrogen containing
groups 2 I ) were attached onto the surface as evidenced by FTIR and XPS. The hydrophilicity increased significantly as shown by contact angle measurements. The content of aromatic groups in PS and PVN decreased as a result of irradiation in hydrazine atmosphere, which was accompanied by a significant drop in the refractive index. The UV-assisted surface modification with hydrazine was also applicable to elastomers. With the 2 I 3 units at the surface acting as anchoring groups, DNA sequences were covalently bound to the surface of an latomer disothiocyanate as spacer). The DNA immobilization capacity amounted to Ca. 20% after 15 hours of extraction.
