Free radical polymerization of acrylic monomers, oligomers or polymers has many applications in the UV curing area. Since the efficiency of a photopolymerization reaction is governed for a part by the reactivity of the photoinitiating system, there is still a growing interest in the study of the photophysical and photochemical processes involved in the excited states of the photoinitiator. To have access to these processes, one can use Time Resolved Absorption Spectroscopy technique (TRAS) either in the nanosecond or picosecond time scale. We applied TRAS to 2 commercial photoinitiators based on the acetophenone moiety. Time and spectral data were gathered at the same time through a picosecond pump-probe spectroscopy set-up thereby giving some insight into the photochemical a-cleavage reaction.
