The work for this presentation was carried out over the last two years within the Corporate Research Department in cooperation with different Product Managements of the former Herberts Group, today DuPont Performance Coatings. The demand for scratch and chemical resistant clear coats has increased over the last years and is still growing. New cars, being washed before delivery, sometimes show scratches leading to dissatisfaction of the customer. In principle a scratch resistant clear coat can be formulated, but unfortunately the scratch resistance is contrary to the chemical resistance. This means that always well balanced properties have to be adjusted. Although slight improvements are still possible it is not expected to reach big improvements by using conventional chemistnes. They seem to reach there boundaries. With the goal to combine both aspects within one coating we started to develop a new generation of UV coatings for exterior use. We wanted to answer the question if today high levels of scratch and chemical resistance can be combined in one coating and what key challenges have to be overcome.
