Detailed analyses of photo-cured vinyl ether blends with epoxysilicone polymers have confirmed prior reports that such compositions are useful radiation-cure release coating systems. We have found that release performance of such blended coatings are consistent with coatings' organic content, micromorphology, and thermomechanical properties. Reactive silicone blends with both low and high levels of vinyl ether diluents have been evaluated for photocure response, ease of coating, and release characteristics. Several vinyl ethers possess excellent diluency power and miscibility with epoxyfunctional silicone polymers and improve overall system compatibility with polar additives including 'onium salt photocatalysts. Dynamic Mechanical Analysis and Atomic Force Microscopy of cured blends reveal that different vinyl ether additives have very different effects on mechanical and surface properties which in turn help account for their effects on coating properties and release performance.
