At present, economical environment in Japan is not desirable. Japan's
economy suddenly turned to deep recession since 1992 and the sudden
appreciation of yen early in 1995 costs to produce goods in Japan. On the
other hand, the Japanese industry has many hurdles to clear such as
conservation of energy and natural resources, minimization of volatile
organic compounds (VOC), recycling of materials and other environmental
issues. Under such a situation the technology of radiation (UV/EB) curing
is promising to solve the issues of energy conservation and minimization
of VOC. The market had continued to grow at an average rate of more than
ten percent until 1991, and is anticipated to grow at a rate of five to
ten percent in 1995. It should be noted that the growing areas are
changing. Up to 1991, coatings for automotive parts and electric
appliances and printing inks had higher growth rates. Since then,
speciality materials such as photoresists for electronics and liquid
crystal displays (LCD), and coatings for compact disks (CD) or magnetic
optical disks (MO) have had higher growth rates.

In this article, recent trends of market and technology of radiation
curing in Japan are described.
