Since about 200 years, UV-radiation is known as a part of the sun radiation and
nearly exactly one hundred years ago, systemcatical experiences with UVradiation
in medical research began (Finsen, 1896). The first remarks about skin
deseases, caused obviously by UV-radiation, are about 75 years old. A lot of
investigation has been done in the 30's (measurement of colour variation of
human skin and the skin of animals) in Germany; those results have been mostly
confirmed by the experiences of Berger and Urbach in the USA, 30 years later.
The aim of their efforts was to measure respectively to determine a spectral
response function of human skin to UV-radiation. With such a function, it would be
possible to avoid over-exposure in the medical and cosmetic application of UV-Band
UV-A-radiation.
