From the inception of the automotive coatings industry in the early 1900's, through the 1950's, the coatings utilized by the automobile manufacturers to paint new vehicles was essentially the same technology used to repair and refinish those vehicles. Later, in the 1960's with the increased use of chemical crosslinkers, original equipment manufacturing (OEM) and refinish technologies began to diverge. One-component (1 K) amino resin and blocked isocyanate cured systems became the dominant technology in OEM. On the other hand, isocyanate-crosslinked, two-component (2K) urethanes and lacquers grabbed the major share of the refinish market technology. With the recent growing interest in UV cured coatings for the automotive sector, there is the possibility that the technologies for both markets will again converge and have a dramatic impact for both refinish and OEM.
