Introduction

The epidermal and handling properties of medical tapes are mainly controlled by the degree
of crosslinking in UV-curable acrylic PSA. Generally an enhanced UV-irradiation dose leads
to reduced adherence to the skin (fig. 1). On the other hand a low curing level is associated
with a low cohesion which finally results in an unacceptable mass transfer to the skin. In
order to obtain superior product qualities the shaded area in fig. 1 thus illustrates the
optimum range of gel content.

More detailed information of the crosslinking process can be obtained from the investigation
of the optical interaction in semitransparent multiacrylates. Due to the chemical changes in
the mass its spectral absorbance was found to correlate with the UV-irradiation energy.
Based on this observation an empirical model could be established describing the energyand
depth-dependence of curing profiles in adhesive coatings.
