The synthesis of water soluble azo compounds and their photochemistry in water and ethanol solution is described. The trans—azosulfonates are perfectly stable up to 200 °C.
However, they decompose at room temperature after transformation into their cis-isomers by UV-light loosing their polar sulfonate group. The 3-vinyiphenylazosulfonate j. was successfully copolymerized with common monomers such as methyl methacrylate ( MMA ). Copolymers of I and MMA became water soluble if the content of was increased above 15 mol%. Completely water soluble copolymers were converted into water insoluble products by UV—irradiation.
The application of those copolymer systems in photoactive resins for offset printing techniques is discussed.
