In many open molding fiberglass composite processes, volatile diluent monomers are used with oligomeric unsaturated polyester or vinyl ester compositions. Curing with accelerator catalyst allow for large amounts of the volatile monomer to be lost, through surface evaporation, before the surface of the resin compositions can set up. This evaporation causes environmental pollution, is hazardous to surrounding workers, causes bulk weight losses and compositional changes in the finished cured product. Attempts have been made to reduce this evaporation but with limited success due to the present economic and commercially accepted systems for applying and curing styrene — unsaturated polyester . This paper discusses the reduction of volatile monomer evaporation through the addition of a process step employing a fast sweeping setting ultraviolet (UV) surface curing process.
