Powder coating curable by ultraviolet light represents a new coating technology combining many
of the advantages of thermosetting powder coating and liquid UV cure coating technology. In
contrast to thermosetting powder coatings, melting and curing of UV powder coatings are two
separate processes. Upon exposure to heat, UV curable powder coatings melt and flow into a
smooth film without crosslinking. Following heating and flow-out, the molten film is crosslinked by exposure to UV 1 Absence of thermal cure during melting of UV powder coatings allows optimum flow-out making smooth finishes achievable even at relatively low temperatures (i.e. 90-140°C). Low temperature flow-out combined with rapid curing, makes UV powders coating an ideal method for the coating of several types of heat sensitive 2 This presentation gives an overview of the properties of UV powder coatings which enable the finishing of diverse heat sensitive substrates in general and specifically, MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard). The performance of two UV powder coating systems based on TM resins specifically designed for UV curing is highlighted. These are —
