A survey of the industrial coatings market , reveals that both powder coatings and UV curable coatings are playing a significant role in offering end users alternatives to traditional low solids, solvent based coatings. Powder coatings, with their excellent durability and mechanical properties, have established a strong position in many industrial coating applications on robust metal components. On the other hand, UV curing technology has gained widespread acceptance in areas such as graphic arts, wood finishing, plastic container decoration and electronics. The advantages of high speed curing without the presence of additional heat have been major advantages. Combining these two technologies offers the possibility of opening new markets for both UV curing and powder coating. This paper will review the current status of both powder coatings and UV curable coatings and discuss the progress and future development of UV curable powder coatings. A review of the first commercial applications of this new technology, are also included.
