Uv-curable powder is very well suited for coating 3-dimensional objects made from medium density
fibreboard (MDF), typically for use in kitchen, bathroom and general furniture applications. In this
paper, the advantagesand limitations of uv-powder over conventional adhesive laminates and liquid
uv-coatings are outlined. The physical and chemical requirements of coatings for this market are
discussed and test results shown for a commercial, uv-curable, powder system, which has been
specially developed for this market. In addition, ways of overcoming the problems of electrostatic
application of powder coatings to a non-conductive substrate, such as MDF are presented and the
effects of the physical properties of the MDF substrate on coating quality are discussed.
