Powder coatings continue to show double digit growth in all regions of the world
largely outpacing the growth rate of conventional solvent based coatings. This
high growth rate is at the expense of conventional solvent based systems where
powder coatings are favoured over liquid systems due to environmental reasons
(no VOC), economical reasons (up to 95 % efficiency) and also to the excellent
quality coatings which this technology offers. Currently powder make up about
twelve percent of all industrial coatings in Western Europe which is the most
mature market for powder coatings and this would be expected to increase to
about 18 % by the year 2000.1)

In spite of the highly optimistic outlook there remains in W. Europe up to 70% of
all industrial coatings which due to technical and technological limitations cannot
be substituted by powder coatings .A significant portion of these 70% are the
coatings applied on heat sensitive substrates as wood and plastics where the
curing conditions of classical powder coatings severely limit their use.
