Throughout most parts of Europe, an in particular all along the Mediterranean Area, polyurethane (PU) coatings are the system of choice whenever high quality coatings are applied to protect wooden surfaces. The same applies to many other regions, e. g. Japan and above all Greater China.
A major part of the PU coatings is applied as a clear coat, in various layers. Typical examples for the use of PU are fast drying sanding sealers and highly scratch resistant top coats. In order to achieve high film builds, especially in southern Europe PU often is combined with layers of unsaturated polyesters. Thus, the typical Mediterranean look of furniture is achieved. Other examples include pigmented coatings for highly chemical resistant, light stable kitchen cabinet or office furniture coatings.
