Diacrylates are effective and frequently used reactive diluents in radiation curing formulations.
Selection of an appropriate reactive diluent requires specific attention on the effects on
viscosity cutting power, but also a careful assessment of the toxic and irritation potential of the
diacrylate. Attention is directed in this presentation from conventional diacrylates — reaction
products of small molecular weight did and acrylic acid — to two new series of diacrylates,
based on alkoxylated BEPD diol. Impact of both ethoxylation and propoxylation on the
properties of the diacrylates is reported. Effects of the alkoxylated diacrylates in radiation curing
application will be discussed in detail. Results suggest that alkoxylated-BEPD-diacrylates can
readily be used as powerful, mild irritant (P.l.l.<<1) reactive diluent in radiation curing
formulations.
