Since its introduction more than 25 years ago commercial radiation curing has experienced a continuous growth as a result of its environmental and technological advantages. Despite having a
market share of only approximately 4% this technology and the corresponding demand for its raw
materials is expected to show growth significantly above the average for the coatings 1 Currently, the main application for radiation curing is in coatings for objects in interior use, such as clear coats for wood furniture and 2 Increasingly, radiation curing is also used in pigmented 3 and to a lesser extent in systems for outdoor 4 These applications make higher demands on the raw materials, especially with respect to yellowing and weatherability. The object of these investigations is to determine the influence of weathering on radiation cured, radically polymerized resins. The yellowing of a variety of different radiation curable resins was observed under thermal as well as photochemical stress.
